Events

Stock Market Game

Manage a simulated portfolio of $10,000 for four weeks and win up to $100!

Registration

  1. Go to Investopedia Stock Simulator, and register for an account.
  2. On the Simulator page, click "View More Games" under "Join a Public Game"
  3. Search by “Game Name” and type in “WPI”
  4. Find “WPI IA 2016 Campus Game” and click “Join” on the right side
  5. When prompted for a password, enter "Goatbucks2016"
  6. Learn more through our resources and attending our upcoming Crash Course (details in the daily events email)
  7. Have fun! The game runs March 21st - April 22nd.

Rules

  • Late entries are allowed – join anytime!
  • Margin trading short selling, and options trading are allowed.
  • Cannot sell securities within 15 minutes of purchase.
  • No single security can make up more than 50% of initial capital.
  • Complete rules can be found here.
  • Individual portfolios, trades, and rank are visible to all players.

Automated Trading Competition

Use an online Python platform to build, backtest, and trade using algorithms.

Submission

  1. Go to Quantopian, and click "Start Coding" to jump right into your first algorithm!
  2. Use the Quantopian Lecture Series or our other resources for reference.
  3. Submissions are due at 11:59pm on Sunday, April 3.
  4. Each WPI student is allowed up to 3 submissions (different algorithms); keep in mind that only the best-performing submission for each student will be counted.
  5. To submit, email iaexec@wpi.edu with your algorithm files in the form [username]_[submission number].py (for example, jsmith@wpi.edu would submit files named jsmith_1.py, jsmith_2.py, and jsmith_3.py).

Rules

  • Submitted algorithms must compile error-free on Minute backtesting mode.
  • Algorithms will run using Quantopian Paper Trading (simulation based on live data) for 3 weeks, 4/3-4/22, and will be judged on final portfolio value.
  • The use of leverage is prohibited. This can be ensured with the order_target_percent() method, and checked with context.account.leverage.
  • Submissions will remain confidential.
